Frequently Asked Questions

Is AFSL Pro recognized as an official partner in workforce skills development by the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (CPMT)?

AFSL Pro is recognized by the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (CPMT) as regards implementation of the Act to promote workforce skills development and recognition (Certificate of Registration #0055661) in Quebec.

I’ve always taken classes in a traditional set-up. Why should I change?

It’s just not possible for everyone in a group to be at the same point. One must wait for some students, then try to catch certain notions that others have grasped more quickly. With our method, thanks to RSA’s learning platform, you can go over notions less well understood as many times as you like and quickly skim over those elements which you find easy. The small group classes allow you to interact with others—just like in a traditional course, with the added advantage that you are then better prepared to practice what you have learned.

How do the courses work?

In registering with us, you acquire unlimited access to the Rosetta Stone® Advantage (RSA) platform, the best language learning program available today. Together, we determine which content will best meet your needs; we may also create a customized program for you. With your tutor, you establish your goals and your autonomous work program in Rosetta Stone® Advantage.  Your assigned teacher/tutor will follow your progress, usually each week, at a distance or in presence.  In addition to this flexible and useful dimension, your participation in the classes enables you to practice what you have learned according to a pre-established, yet flexible schedule.  The combination of these three elements allows you to benefit from the advantages of traditional teaching, from the wealth of RSA’s multimedia and from an individualized and professional accompaniment.

Will I learn more than in a traditional course?

Without question, since the time spent practicing online will allow you to address your language weaknesses and to devote yourself to what is most useful to you. Your tutor’s follow-up helps you  stay motivated,  provides you with a quick reply to your questions and a prompt resolution of any obstacles you may encounter. And thanks to the traditional teaching aspect of our course, you get the best of both worlds…

Two hours of language activity doesn’t seem like much. How can I learn to speak another language with so little time in class?

It’s the autonomous work on line which makes the difference, allowing you to learn and to refine numerous language elements. Classroom practice is intense since our groups are limited to 8 learners maximum.

Is it more expensive than a traditional course?

On the contrary!  Our rates compare favorably with those of all the language schools, according to the type of course chosen. Besides, if you take even an average advantage of the RSA platform, you will never find elsewhere a better quality-price ratio.

How much does it cost?

The price varies according to the type of subscription chosen.

When can I start?

Two types of subscription are available: small group classes, 12-weeks long, which start at regular times during the year; and customized individual subscriptions—AFSL, AFSL Pro + and AFSL Pro ++, which start any time, according to your needs and availability.

Do I need to add any particular elements to my computer?

You don’t need anything special for Rosetta Stone® Advantage (RSA).  See for yourself:

  • - 1.5 GHz processor
  • - 512 MB RAM
  • - 50 MB available on hard drive
  • - 1024x768 resolution, at least 16 million colors
  • - Sound card
  • - Speakers and microphone or headset
  • - Microsoft Windows® XP/Vista/7/8, 32/64 bits or Macintosh OS X v.10.3 or later, recent versions of Linux
(for example, Ubuntu 9.10, released in 2009)
  • - Internet Explorer 6, 32 bits or later for Microsoft Windows, Safari version 4 or later for Macintosh, Firefox version 3.5 or later for Microsoft Windows, Chrome version 4 or later for Microsoft Windows
(Note: JavaScript must be active in the browser.)
  • - Flash Player 10.0
  • - 192 Kb/s Internet or Intranet connection

How much time does it take to access the lessons on the computer?

You can access your study programme as soon as you receive your username and password at registration time.

What method do you use?

We have developed a unique hybrid method: part of the work is autonomous, done online on the Rosetta Stone® Advantage multimedia platform.  Each learner is assigned a tutor-teacher who follows his/her work online and measures the learner’s progress. Finally, the learner participates in on site or online classes, practicing his new knowledge.

If I subscribe, how many levels could I complete during the 6 months of my online subscription?

It all depends on your commitment. A normal progress over the six months of your subscription generally allows one to complete two 12-week small group sessions. However, the wealth and flexibility of our system allows a learner who is motivated and enthusiastic to go much further. It’s up to you!

What is your refund policy should I be unable to take the class?

The initial deposit, made when the license is opened, is not refundable. However, you may be reimbursed for those classes which you are unable to assist, pro-rata, as indicated in our proposal.

Is it possible to obtain a certificate upon completion of an AFSL Pro course?

AFSL Pro will provide you a certificate stating your language level, the number of hours you have spent in class and worked online.

Should your training be given within the context of the Loi favorisant le développement et la reconnaissance des compétences de la main-d'oeuvre  (Certificat d’enregistrement # 0055661), you will automatically receive a certificate at the end of the course.

What do I need to take an online course?

You will need a headset with microphone and a computer with a built-in or USB camera.
